Feast of Tabernacles |
Text:John 7:40-44
40 Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” Still others were saying, “Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Feast of Tabernacles
John 7:40-44
40 Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is the Prophet.” When the people at the festival saw Jesus stand up and heard His invitation they were certain that He was the Prophet of Deuteronomy18:15, a type of Moses. 15"The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him."
41 Others were saying,“This is the Christ.”Still others were saying “Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee is He? The others who said 'this is the Christ' must have had this truth revealed to them super
naturally by the Holy Spirit the same way God revealed Jesus Christ to you and I when we were saved. And the others who were not sure probably did not understand that Jesus' birth place was Bethlehem and so they became divided over who Jesus is.

42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” This is a rhetorical question being asked by the author of this book in an effort to persuade his audience to think about the fact that Jesus was born in Bethlehem which is where the Messiah will come from. His question is directed at the first century Church and everyone (including you and I) who
will be reading The Gospel of John. He is telling us that we should already know the answer to his question, “Has not the scripture said?” and so should the people at the festival have known.
43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. The subject of who Christ is remains to be a cause of divisions in our personal and social lives today. I recently had a long time non-Christian friend tell that he doesn’t want to hear anymore “Jesus talk”. The message of the Gospel of Christ remains the same today “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matt4:17 and there will be divisions “because of Him”
He was doing just that at this festival as He tabernacle'd among us. The Old Testament pointed us to the Messiah and our response should be praise and thanksgiving and faith in Jesus Christ.
